Speaking Task: Record your Monologue

Dear all,

This week I would like you to do and record your own monologue. Choose from the list of topics below the one you feel most comfortable with, and remember you have three minutes to take notes before you start.

You will have to send your audio file to my email address before Thursday. To do this, you simply have to share the file (compartir on your mobile phones) and choose the option correo electrónico.
IMPORTANT: Before sending the audio file to your teacher, please share it with a partner and check each other's monologues. Then you will be able to correct avoidable errors, and improve the final version. (Remember to use the hoja de superación de errores).

Making Progress in your Speaking

The English Teachers at EOI Fuenlabrada have created a series of documents with great tips and fantastic models of B1 speaking exam, both for the monologue (task 1) and the interaction (task 2). Please read the vitally important tips first, and then read the models proposed below very carefully. This should be a great help when preparing your perfomance for this coming May!

Today, Thursday April 26th

Dear all, I can´t go to the school today, but I'd like to suggest that you go to class and work together on the following tasks:

1- Listening. Here follows a listening test that you could do as a class, using the computer on the teacher's desk:

2- Cloze. Here is a cloze for you to do in 20 minutes in class.

3- You could use the time left to practice the interaction cards posted below in pairs, after taking a look at the post "getting ready to the speaking exam".

Finally, as part of your homework for next week, you have to do a writing: there are two options:

a) an article following the instructions on page 115, with a free topic of your choice; or
b) a film review, following the instructions on page 117, and choosing the film you want.

Useful expressions to connect your discourse

Connecting your discourse as you speak or write is an essential tool when engaging in a conversation, writing others, or presenting your monologue. Here follows a nice compilation of them: go through the list, make sure that you understand the context in which they are used, and then choose those you like best or feel more comfortable with. Do not learn them all, it's better that you start taking your pick and feel comfortable using them.

Shadowing is a learning technique where you listen to a text in your target language, and then speak it aloud at the same time as the native speaker, so that you become his/her shadow.

The basic concept is as follows: listen to the audio once or twice, to make sure you understand what it is about. Then you listen to it again and pause it to repeat the words, then you write down the words the speaker says until you have the whole audioscript. After that, you play the audio again until you can read it confidently at the same time as the native speaker. Finally, you get up from your seat to walk around the house repeating the exacts words as if you were the native person yourself.

So, here's my proposal to get started in this new technique: Become the shadow of Patch Adams. Patch Adams is an American physician, social activist, clown, and author who has some really interesting ideas to share with us about living in a healthy world.

Please, don't do this for more than 2 minutes at a time, we should start doing this little by little to avoid frustration, ok?

Speaking Practice

As you already know, we're going to devote the month of March to practicing the next speaking exam in June. Every week I will have one pair of students do the exam in front of the class as if they were in the real situation in June. I hope not to run out of volunteers! Anyway, here are the cards, so please everybody take a look at the speaking cards for this week.

So, who'd like to be candidate A and candidate B? :-)

Fernando: Perfect! where shall we meet?
Teresa: At the school. We are meeting in the library
Fernando: Cool! Listen, can I bring my gear? I'd like to show you how I actually use it when I go mountain climbing!
Teresa: Sure! Bring your stuff, I do historical fencing*, and I'm going to show you my equipment too!
Fernando: Wow, that sounds amazing! Hey, could you show us some pictures?
