For your Reading Pleasure: The Citadel by A. J. Croning (Graded Reader)

The Citadel is a novel by A. J. Cronin, first published in 1937, which was groundbreaking in its treatment of the contentious theme of medical ethics. It has been credited with laying the foundation in Great Britain for the introduction of the NHS a decade later. In the United States, it won the National Award for 1937 novels, voted by members of the American Bookshellers Association.
For his fifth book, Dr. Cronin drew on his experiences practising medicine in the coal mining communities of the South Wales Valleys. Specifically, he had researched and reported on the correlation between coal dust inhalation and lung disease in the town of Tredegar. He had also worked as a doctor for the Tredegar Aid Society at the Cottage Hospital, which served as the model for the National Health Service.
Croning once stated in an interview, "I have written in The Citadel all I feel about the medical profession, its injustices, its hide-bound unscientific stubbornness, its humbug... The horrors and inequities detailed in the story I have personally witnessed. This is not and attack against individuals, but against a system."

Five Short Stories by Roald Dahl

Most of you may already be acquainted with this famous Welsh author; there is actually quite a few books by him in our library. He's written very many different things (novels, poetry, scripts for films...), but he's best known for his children's books, and short stories. Dahl's short stories are known for their unexpected endings, and his children's books for their unsentimental, macabre, and often darkly comic mood. His books have sold more than 250 million copies worldwide.

During this uncertain period of home confinement, I suggest reading five of his best-known short stories: The Umbrella ManThe LandladyLamb to the SlaughterThe Hitchhiker, and The Way Up to Heaven. Here they are, on this free link below for you to download. We will be holding a class discussion once we're back to class. Hopefully soon!

Enjoy the read!

And one more cloze for the road... Prepackaged Food Takes Over

This is one of the last cloze exercises you're gonna do this year (apart from the one in the exam). Remember to read the text slowly, and to make sure you understand the text and every idea in it. Only then you make your choice, ok? A complete version of the article is included in this link, right after the gapped version, but please try not to succumb to temptation too soon!

Today, Thursday April 26th

Dear all, I can´t go to the school today, but I'd like to suggest that you go to class and work together on the following tasks:

1- Listening. Here follows a listening test that you could do as a class, using the computer on the teacher's desk:

2- Cloze. Here is a cloze for you to do in 20 minutes in class.

3- You could use the time left to practice the interaction cards posted below in pairs, after taking a look at the post "getting ready to the speaking exam".

Finally, as part of your homework for next week, you have to do a writing: there are two options:

a) an article following the instructions on page 115, with a free topic of your choice; or
b) a film review, following the instructions on page 117, and choosing the film you want.

Required Reading before Xmas: Roald Dahl's Short Stories

Most of you are already acquainted with this very famous Welsh author, there is actually quite a few books by him in our library.

Before the end of this year you are required to read five of his very famous short stories: The Umbrella Man, The Landlady, Lamb to the Slaughter, The Hitchhiker, and The Way Up to Heaven. Here they are, for you to download. A total of 45 pages that you are asked to read by December 12th/13th (you have two weeks for that).

After that, we will do plenty of things with what you've read, but for the time being concentrate on reading the five stories, and understanding all they say, will you? The rest of the instructions will be delivered in class by Ignacio.

...who make our lives better... and theirs too!!

Remember the mood-food debate in class last week? We all had the chance to reflect on how food actually affects our mood, right? Now I would like to show you a piece of research which deals with another very important nutrient for our brains: Music. You're going to listen to a news story about the relationship between music and the human brain. Click on the link below to hear and read all about it.  And thanks, musicians, for being around!!
